Collaborative Toolkit Building for Campus Trust and Safety

Despite our desire for the university to be a safe space of learning, it has never been immune to the threats of misogyny, racism, and queer and transphobia. The 1989 Montreal massacre at École Polytechnique targeted the women and, by proxy of their gender, assumed feminists of an engineering classroom. All too recently, the perpetrator of the 2023 stabbing of a professor and two students here at the University of Waterloo, described by investigators as a hate crime, targeted a course on the philosophy of gender. These attacks are part of unregulated networked ecosystems that encourage technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), a range of practices that deploy technologies to position women and girls as secondary in status online and in the world.

As such, we need to develop feminist, anti-racist, and queer- and trans-friendly campus resources to address these ecosystems. This campus initiative seeks to build resources that address the role of TFGBV and its impacts on our university campus.

The Aims of 3C+:

  1. Engage campus stakeholders, including students, lecturers, staff, and tenure-track and tenured faculty, who are most vulnerable to the effects of TFGBV to...

  2. Build community and foster care in order to...

  3. Collaborate on customizable toolkits that address and shift cultures of misogyny, queerphobia, and racism in our spaces of learning

What is the 3C+ survey?

The 3C+ survey aims to collect data surrounding the current climate and knowledge of technologically-facilitated gender based violence at UW. The answers in this survey will help us learn how online misogyny, queerphobia, and transphobia show up on our physical and digital campus spaces (in case these terms are new to you, don't worry! Explanations of each are embedded within the survey). This survey is voluntary, anonymous, and will take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time.
